JR East has announced the development of the latest Shinkansen model, the “E10 Series,” designed for the Tohoku Shinkansen.

Test runs are scheduled to begin in 2027, with the goal of starting commercial operations in the 2030 fiscal year.

The E10 Series incorporates technologies tested on the ALFA-X experimental train, integrating feedback from its evaluations.

Dividers have been installed between the two-seat rows to enhance sound insulation and privacy.

The seating arrangement is 2+2, featuring power outlets and USB charging ports. Additionally, the installation of extra Wi-Fi routers has improved connectivity.

The train will have a maximum speed of 320 km/h, the same as the existing E5 Series, and will consist of ten cars per set.

For the first time in Shinkansen history, the design has been created by the UK-based consultancy “Tangerine”, drawing inspiration from the mountains of the Tohoku region and the delicate petals of cherry blossoms.

However, the E10 Series will not be introduced on the Hokkaido Shinkansen after 2031. Instead, it will primarily serve as an upgrade for the Tohoku Shinkansen.
